As of 1 January 2026, the new edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services (Nice Classification) 13th Edition (NCL 13-2026) has officially entered into force. The update was adopted within the framework of the Nice Agreement and applies to trademark applications filed worldwide, including in Uzbekistan. The changes affect both specific goods and service descriptions and are particularly relevant for applicants preparing new trademark filings.
Key Changes in Goods Classification
Several goods have been reassigned between classes to better reflect their primary purpose:
Eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses have been moved from Class 9 to Class 10, as they are now considered medical devices.
Electrically heated clothing has been transferred from Class 11 to Class 25, recognizing that its essential function is apparel rather than heating equipment.
Emergency and rescue vehicles have been reassigned to Class 12, which covers vehicles.
In addition, the classification of essential oils has been clarified. Their placement now depends on their intended use. Cosmetic use goes to Class 3, while medical use is listed in Class 5, food flavoring is placed for Class 30 and chemical components is aligned with Class 1. These refinements aim to increase precision and reduce ambiguity in trademark specifications.
Developments in Service Classification
The 13th Edition also reflects modern market trends and technological developments. Artificial Intelligence as a Service (AI-as-a-Service) is now expressly included in Class 42. Airport lounge services are specifically recognized under Class 43. Notary services are clearly listed in Class 45. The updated classification system better aligns with the digital economy and evolving commercial practices.
Practical Implications for Trademark Applicants
Previously registered trademarks will not be automatically reclassified. However, all new applications filed after 1 January 2026 must comply with the updated edition. Incorrect class selection or outdated wording may result in office actions, delays, or potential refusals. Therefore, it is advisable to review goods and services descriptions carefully before filing.
